Xbox Companion App for Windows Phone Controls Your Xbox, Turns Phone into Remote

Xbox Companion AppIf you haven’t already heard, there was some very big news released by Microsoft’s Xbox team recently. According to the team, they are bringing a “new world of entertainment” to your living room with the promise of making it faster, more fun and easier to find. In a fancy new video posted by the Xbox team, you can see all the new possibilities coming up with the Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE and the Kinect. Sharp-eyed viewers may notice something else as well.

If you paid close attention to the video, you may have noticed that the striped-shirt girl popped out a Windows Phone and started searching for content that appeared on her Xbox. That fancy technology is the unfortunately unavailable yet still incredibly amazing Xbox Companion App (PS3, eat your electronic heart out).

The Xbox Companion App will be completely free for Windows Phone users and is an amazing little app that will allow you to Find, Learn more about and Control content from your Xbox LIVE Marketplace on your Xbox 360, according to the team.

There are multiple stories out there about what the app does from users who have been fortunate enough to get a beta copy of the app. Here are some of the features of the new Xbox Companion App:

  • Finding Content: The Xbox Companion App allows you to search content on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, just as if you were on your Xbox. You can search the marketplace’s large catalog of movies, games, music and TV shows and pick what you want.
  • Learn more about what you’re watching, listening to or playing: Pressing the title of something on the app takes you to the info page about that product, whether it be a movie, TV show, game, song or musical artist.
  • Control & Play: After you select something, like a movie for example, and hit “play” the Xbox Companion App switches to “controller mode” which allows you to navigate your Xbox or control video playback. The best part is that the commands are activated almost instantaneously allowing you to easily use your phone as a remote.

The Windows Phone Xbox Companion App should be available soon, bringing a whole new Xbox experience to users. Like I mentioned earlier, the app, once it’s released, will be absolutely free for Windows Phone customers, not a bad deal if you ask me.
